Programme

The conference will offer a full two-days programme, stretching from lunchtime on Monday November 13th to lunchtime on Wednesday November 15th.

Keynote speakers
The following distinguished speakers will provide keynote presentations on the issue of immigration and labour market integration:

• Professor Christian Dustmann, University College London

• Professor Godfried Engbersen, Erasmus University of Rotterdam

• Chairman Lil Ljunggren Lönnberg, Delegation for the Employment of Young People and Newly Arrived Migrants

• Director Olof Åslund, Institute for Evaluation of Labour Market and Education Policy in Sweden (IFAU)

Panel discussion
During the conference we will also have a panel discussion on the theme “Labour Market Integration of Immigrants – A European Challenge" with representatives of the European Commission, the Swedish Government and international experts:

Parallel sessions
We will have several parallel sessions where researchers from a wide range of disciplines will present research related to immigration and labour market integration. We have also invited practitioners and NGOs to share their experience on how labour market integration of immigrants is carried out in practice.

The City of Gothenburg Reception
On the first day of the conference The City of Gothenburg welcomes all conference delegates to a reception hosted by the City Council. You sign up for the reception as you register for the conference.

Conference Dinner
On the second day of the conference we will enjoy dinner together at the River Restaurant on the pier with beautiful view over the city from the waterside.

Preliminary conference programme

Conference day 1 – Monday November 13th 2017
Registration opens at 10:30. The conference programme will start after lunch with an opening plenary session, followed by parallel sessions. In the evening the City of Gothenburgs hosts a city reception.

Conference day 2 – November 14th 2017
The second day will include a full day of plenary and parallel sessions, as well as a panel discussion. In the evening there will be a congress dinner.

Conference day 3 – November 15th 2017
The last day will offer parallel sessions in the morning and a final plenary session. The conference will close at lunchtime.

A more detailed programme will be made available after abstracts have been accepted.
 

Keynote speakers

Christian Dustmann is professor of economics at University College London and director of the Centre for Research and Analysis of Migration (CReAM). Professor Dustmann is a leading labour economist whose main research focus is on migration, education and the labour market. He has conducted important studies on the impact of immigration on the labour market and the consequences for the economy at large, as well as on the integration of first- and second- generation immigrants.

Godfried Engbersen is professor of Sociology at the Erasmus University of Rotterdam, the Netherlands. His current research activities focus on irregular migration, the relationship between restrictive migration regimes and crime, local and transnational citizenship as well as liquid migration from Central and Eastern Europe (SOPEMI) of OECD and was elected member of the Dutch Advisory Commission on Alien Affairs.

Lil Ljungren Lönnberg is the chairman of the governmental Delegation for the Employment of Young People and Newly Arrived Migrants (Dua). Dua has since December 2014 been commissioned to promote cooperation between municipalities and the Public Employment Service (PES) regarding young unemployed and since the beginning of 2017 also to promote cooperation in order for efforts for the establishment of newly arrived migrants in working life to gain greater impact at local level. The foremost tool of Dua in encouraging cooperation is local agreements between municipalities and the PES. Dua’s work is conducted in dialogue with the PES and the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions.

Olof Åslund is director-general at the Institute for Evaluation of Labour Market and Education Policy (IFAU) and professor of economics at Uppsala University. He is also a member of the Migration Studies Delegation (Delmi). His research focuses on international migration, the labour market of minorities, discrimination and labour market policies.
